British teenage boy flying to India for spine decompression surgery.

A mother who has been told her son may have to wait a year for a spine operation to restore his mobility, is to fly overseas for his spine decompression surgery in India. Thomas Wagner, 14, of Essex, injured his back in an ice-skating accident on Christmas Eve. His mother- Anna, 44, who has been told her son may have to wait a year for a spinal decompression surgery, According to the County General Hospital, she had been told the worst-case scenario, but they hoped things could go ahead soon, and they are neither inflexible nor unsympathetic. Mrs. Wagner was apparently told by the hospital that Thomas would have to wait 15 weeks to see a consultant, and then, if he were considered an urgent case, would be put on a nine-month waiting list. Mrs. Wagner had taken the summer off work to care for her son, and says the waiting time was "ridiculous". She was concerned about her son's psychological state if he had to wait for a year for the operation. She has booked the flights for 5th March. Thomas can apparently move around the house but if he stands up for more than two or three minutes it is quite painful. The cost of spine decompression surgery in India in India is very low as compare to the other countries.

Spinal Decompression Surgery

Decompression is a surgical procedure that is performed to alleviate pain caused by pinched nerves (neural impingement). In this type of back surgery, a small portion of the bone over the nerve root and/or disc material from under the nerve root is removed to give the nerve root more space and provide a better healing environment. Several conditions may cause neural impingement, including spinal stenosis, a disc herniation, isthmic spondylolisthesis, degenerative spondylolisthesis, or (rarely) a spinal tumor.

Symptoms of Spinal Decompression include:

In severe cases, pressure on the spinal nerves can cause paralysis and problems with bladder and/or bowel function.
